Tommy Hilfiger has kept its flag navy for decades. It just turned black for one team, which tells you more about this partnership than any press release does.
Tommy Hilfiger has released the second instalment of its Fanwear collection for the Cadillac Formula 1 Team, and the flag is the tell. It has stayed the same shade of navy through every era of the brand, and for Cadillac it goes black, pulling heritage jackets, knitwear, hoodies, polo shirts and tees into a red, white and black palette that reads more racetrack than yacht club. Small change, on paper. In practice it is Hilfiger doing to its own most recognisable symbol what it has never done for anyone else.

The driver pieces make the same point from a different angle. Sergio “Checo” Pérez and Valtteri Bottas are racing for Cadillac this season, Zhou Guanyu is the team’s reserve driver, and each of them gets a piece built specifically around him, name and race number caught in 3D transfers against chrome Cadillac chevrons. Even the Cadillac shield, which could easily have been the whole point of the design, sits back as a finishing detail instead. Restraint like that is not something fan merchandise usually bothers with.

Pérez’s presence in the collection runs deeper than a campaign booking. He signed as Tommy Hilfiger’s Global Menswear Ambassador back in December, which puts him inside the brand rather than simply in front of its camera, and it is the reason he leads a range built around three drivers rather than sharing the spotlight evenly. “The excitement surrounding the Cadillac Formula 1 Team has been building throughout the season, and we are proud to be part of this journey,” Tommy Hilfiger said. “Seeing these world-class drivers bring the fall collection to life reflects the confidence and global spirit of our partnership.”

None of this is a one-off. Hilfiger became the team’s exclusive Fanwear partner earlier this season and has been building from there ever since, and what comes next stretches the idea further still: Race Special capsules tied to Las Vegas, Austin and Mexico City, each with its own graphics and colours built around that stop on the calendar. A fan’s wardrobe, treated the way a team treats its car, changing race to race instead of sitting still for a whole season.
